how to travel like a boss, during #Covid19

We were not prepared for this. ⚠️⚠️⚠️
.
2020 has been suspended until further notice; we are out of our home country and more recently, also out of job and our home. It’s all kinds of uncertain, challenging, and scary even but we set out for an epic 90-day journey across the island. Here are a few trips and tricks to ensure you keep COVID away from you as you go on your next travel adventure.

Tip 1: Skip Public Transport for a Rental 🚗

If you’ve been following us, you’ll know our love for public transport. But post quarantine, the most important criterion for moving around was safety. We have a bike in Colombo but there are a few issues – firstly it’s always monsoon somewhere in Sri Lanka; secondly, since we are traveling long term in a crisis situation so we have more luggage than just our backpacks; third you can’t ride the expressways and lastly we felt we’ll be a bit too exposed on a bike. 😷😷

So we decided to rent a car. After some searching, we found @casonsrentacar – good value for money, professional rental company, and picked an Alto for a few months. Yes, it’s a stick shift, Indian made car and we have grown to love it. After all, we are carrying our world in it – 2 backpacks, bedsheets, some utensils, and even our water filter. 😝 We make sure to wear masks when we’re in a town/village and sanitize our hands and everything that enters the car. The roads are a treat, the views insane and we’ve seen it all from peacocks to iguanas and even came across a wild elephant crossing the road probably to meet his friends for a nightcap. Al keeps stopping to click pictures, buy fruits, or for coconut water breaks. Again, we keep our distance while being our friendly best, carry lots of change, and always try to be fair to the little shop owners. You won’t believe the number of smiles we’ve seen behind those masks.

60 days done already!
3200 kms.
10 destinations.
2 road-bound crazies, away from home, making the most of “being stuck” on the serendipity island.
One mission – to learn and share about responsible travel in the new normal. So wear that mask and hop on…

Tip 2: Carry your blanky

Not just COVID, but a lot of virus and bacteria spread through surfaces. As a rule of thumb Al doesn’t sleep on hotel pillows directly (she covers it with a sarong / scarf we carry enough of) and never uses hotel towels for her face / hair. It’s a hygiene habit picked sometime during our college time travels and it has rubbed onto me too. While embarking on post-quarantine travels, we decided to carry an extra bag with our bedsheet and blanky in it. Thanks to driving a rental car, that was not such a big problem for the obsessive light packers that we want to be. We make our own bed everyday, it feels cozier sleeping in our own bedsheets and we can literally, “rest assured”. So when you’re traveling in the new normal, pack light cotton bedsheets and wash them every 2 weeks or whenever your change the hotel. Do you have any suggestions / tips for safe travels?
