If you’re planning a Canadian Rockies road trip, don’t skip Maligne Lake, located in Jasper National Park, Alberta. Known for its vivid turquoise water and iconic Spirit Island, Maligne Lake is easily one of the best lakes in Alberta to visit, especially in summer. It’s also one of the most breathtaking places we’ve ever seen, anywhere in the world.
Yash and I did a two-week Rockies road trip from Vancouver to Revelstoke, Yoho, Banff and Jasper, and this lake is a big reason Jasper became our favourite town in Alberta. Check out our full Canadian Rockies Road Trip Itinerary.
We had just arrived from Banff late the evening before, exhausted and sun-soaked. That morning, we slept in to get some much-needed rest. We finally left our hotel around 2:30 pm, completely unaware that this day would become one of the most unforgettable of our lives.
The drive to Maligne Lake was wild and spectacular, winding through alpine forests, past glacial rivers and jagged peaks. We kept the windows down the entire way, soaking in the crisp mountain air and spotting wildlife like black bears, grizzlies, and elk (and their babies!).
And then… we arrived at the lake. That surreal blue, framed by snow-dusted peaks, quite literally took our breath away. We wandered around in quiet awe, snapping photos and pinching ourselves more than once. Is this place even real?
We spotted people exploring the gentle lakeside trails and kayaking the glacial waters on your own. But you don’t want to miss the best part – Spirit Island, that lies hidden about 14 km from the main dock. We couldn’t dream of paddling that far, so we opted for the Maligne Lake boat cruise, which turned out to be one of the most magical parts of the trip. We checked the cruise schedule and found that the final departure of the day was at 5:30 pm, two hours away. Without hesitation, we bought tickets, then headed to the lakefront café for a bite and a cold beer while we waited.
We were the first ones in line for the cruise – that’s probably never happened. Maybe it was luck, or maybe it was meant to be. The Maligne Lake boat cruise is an immersive experience. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories from both Indigenous history and the park’s more recent past, helping you see the landscape through a deeper lens. With every passing minute, the water got bluer, the mountains more dramatic – it felt like we were drifting through a dream.
When Spirit Island finally came into view, the entire boat fell silent. When Spirit Island finally comes into view, it’s a moment you won’t forget. Photos or videos don’t do it justice. No filter could match the real thing.
Once we docked, we followed the short trail from the lookout. I still remember it so clearly, there was no one else around, just us. The only sound was the wind brushing through the trees and the occasional bird call. Yash and I didn’t even speak for a full minute. We just stood there, completely still, taking it all in. Honestly, it felt like we’d died and gone to heaven. 🤩🥰
