How to Rent an RV in Canada: Everything We Wish We Knew Before Driving 8,500 km Across the Country

If you’re wondering how to rent an RV in Canada, you’re not alone. When we started our cross-Canada road trip from Vancouver to Halifax, we had the same questions…

A few minutes later, we were driving the largest vehicles we’d ever been behind the wheel of… on the highway, mountain passes and forest service roads.

Not exactly how we’d imagined the start of our dream cross-Canada road trip.

Over the next 35 days, we drove 8,475 kilometres, crossed 8 provinces, slept beside lakes, mountains and forests, and learned that renting an RV is nothing like renting a car.

Some lessons made our trip easier. Others cost us time. A few could have cost us a lot of money if we’d made the wrong decision.

If you’re planning your first RV trip in Canada, whether you’re visiting, you’ve just moved here, or you’ve always wanted to road trip across the country – this guide is everything we wish we’d known before picking up the keys.

  • πŸ’° Cost: From $120–500+ CAD per night, depending on the RV size, season, and rental company.
  • 🚐 Best RV for First-Timers: A Class C Motorhome offers the best balance of comfort and drivability for road trips longer than a week.
  • πŸͺͺ Driver’s Licence: A regular Canadian licence is usually enough. Most visitors can also drive with a valid foreign licence or an International Driving Permit (if required by their home country).
  • πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Rent: May–June or September for lower prices, fewer crowds, and better campground availability.
  • β›Ί Best For: Couples β€’ Friends β€’ Families β€’ First-time RV travellers β€’ Spontaneous road trips β€’ National Park adventures
  • πŸ“… Recommended Trip Length: 7–14 days for the Rockies or Vancouver Island, and 5-8 weeks if you’re planning to drive across Canada.

  • ❀️ What We Rented: Fraserway C-Large Motorhome for a 35-day, 8,475 km cross-Canada road trip.
  • πŸ’‘ TnH Tip: Don’t choose the smallest RV just to save money. If you’re travelling for more than a week, the extra space quickly becomes one of the best investments you’ll make.

❀️ Why We Love It

After 35 days on the road, we understood why so many Canadians spend their summers camping.

An RV isn’t just transportation. It’s your kitchen. Your bedroom. Your coffee shop. Your front-row seat to Canada’s landscapes.

We celebrated becoming Canadian citizens by driving across the country, and we honestly can’t imagine a better way to have done it. Even now, whenever someone asks us what the best way to see Canada is, our answer is always the same:

Rent an RV.

Then leave enough room in your itinerary for the unexpected. Because the places you’ll remember most probably aren’t the ones you planned.

Is Renting an RV in Canada Worth It?

For us?

Absolutely. Not because it was cheaper. But because it completely changed how we experienced Canada.

Instead of checking into a different hotel every night, Canada became our backyard. Morning coffee beside turquoise lakes. Lunch overlooking the Prairies. Dinner inside a national park.

And some of our favourite evenings were simply sitting outside the RV watching the sunset.

You don’t just visit Canada. You live in it.

πŸ’‘ TnH Tip: No previous RV experience is needed. Rental companies like Fraserway provide a full walkthrough before you hit the road, so even first-time renters can feel confident behind the wheel.

How Much Does it Cost to Rent an RV in Canada?

How to Rent an RV in Canada: First-Timer's Road Trip Guide
  • Rental rates
  • Insurance
  • Mileage
  • Fuel
  • Campgrounds
  • Hidden fees
  • Real budget from your trip

The biggest misconception?

People think the rental price is the total cost.

It isn’t.

Here’s what you should budget for.

1. RV Rental

Prices vary depending on:

  • Season
  • RV size
  • Pickup location
  • Rental company
  • Trip length

Generally expect:

  • Small campervan: $120–250/day
  • Class C motorhome: $220–500+/day

Peak summer (July-August) is the most expensive.

2. Campgrounds

Budget:

  • Provincial Parks: $30–60/night
  • National Parks: $35–55/night
  • Private RV Parks: $50–100+/night

3. Fuel

This surprises almost everyone.

Large Class C RVs typically average 20–30 L/100 km, depending on terrain and driving style.

On our cross-Canada trip, we averaged 25.8 L/100 km.

Fuel quickly becomes one of your biggest expenses.

4. Insurance

Never assume insurance is included.

Understand:

  • Collision coverage
  • Liability
  • Deductible
  • Windshield damage
  • Tire damage

This is one of the first questions we’d ask before signing anything.

5. Mileage

Some rentals include unlimited kilometres.

Others include a fixed allowance.

Going over can cost anywhere from $0.35–$0.60 per extra kilometre.

For a long road trip, those costs add up fast.

Which RV Should You Rent in Canada?

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make is choosing the right size RVβ€”and it’s not just about price.

For our 35-day, 8,475 km cross-Canada road trip, we rented the Fraserway C-Large motorhome. At first, driving something that big through Vancouver felt intimidating, but after the first day, it became surprisingly comfortable. More importantly, having enough living space made a huge difference. When you’re spending over a month on the road, your RV isn’t just your vehicleβ€”it’s your bedroom, kitchen, office, and living room.

Looking back, we wouldn’t choose anything smaller for a trip of this length.

Do You Need a Special Licence to Rent an RV in Canada?

One of the questions we were asked the most.

Good news:

Most rental RVs in Canada can be driven with a regular driver’s licence.

That includes visitors and many international licences, although requirements vary by province and country.

Always confirm with your rental company before booking.

❀️ Why We Chose a C-Large

What surprised us most wasn’t how easy it was to drive; it was how much we appreciated the extra space.

After long days exploring national parks, we could cook a proper meal, relax indoors when it rained, work comfortably, and never feel like we were constantly packing and unpacking. Having a full bathroom, plenty of storage, and a permanent bed made the RV feel like a tiny home rather than just a vehicle.

If you’re planning a cross-Canada road trip or anything longer than two weeks, we’d recommend choosing the largest RV you’re comfortable driving. The extra comfort is worth it, and after a day or two behind the wheel, the size quickly stops feeling intimidating.

Planning a similar trip? We rented the Fraserway C-Large Motorhome, and after 35 days on the road, we’d happily choose it again.

Tips for First-Time RV Renters in Canada

Nobody told us these things; these little lessons only come from actually living in an RV. But you don’t need to go through the trial-and-error; we have compiled all the tips and tricks that we learned in the 35 days of driving in different terrain, weather, and conditions.

Bigger isn’t harder after Day 1.

The first hour feels terrifying. The second day feels normal. By the third day, driving the RV felt surprisingly natural.

Grocery shopping becomes strategic.

Instead of buying food every day, you’ll start thinking in terms of fridge space, freezer space and pantry storage.

Dump stations aren’t scary.

Every first-time renter worries about this. It’s honestly much easier than it sounds once someone shows you the process.

Campgrounds book months ahead.

Especially inside Banff, Jasper and popular national parks. If you’re travelling in summer, book as early as possible.

Arrive before dark.

Trust us. Parking a 25-foot RV in daylight is much more relaxing than reversing into a campsite after sunset.

Biggest Mistakes We Made

These saved us every single day.

  • Parks Canada Reservation System
  • iOverlander
  • GasBuddy
  • AllStays (or a similar campground finder)
  • WeatherCAN

How to Rent an RV in Canada Without Making These Mistakes

We definitely made a few.

  • Underestimating fuel costs.
  • Thinking we’d “figure out campgrounds later.”
  • Carrying too much fresh water while driving.
  • Not buying groceries before entering remote national parks.
  • Trying to squeeze in too many driving days.

The biggest lesson?

Slow down. Canada isn’t a destination. It’s what you see and experience on the drive.

Is Renting an RV Better Than Hotels?

So many people ask us this question.

Hotels win for luxury. RVs win for freedom.

Instead of spending hours driving to see the sunrise, you’re already there. Instead of checking out at 11 a.m., your hotel moves with you. And instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, every drive becomes part of the adventure.
