Could you admire Maligne Lake from the shore? Absolutely. You could even rent a canoe or kayak and explore the lake at your own pace. But unless you’re planning a full-day paddle, you won’t reach Spirit Island, the most iconic and breathtaking part of the lake.

Getting to Maligne Lake is surprisingly easy, and honestly, the drive is part of the adventure.
Located about 48 km (45–50 minutes) from the town of Jasper, the lake is reached via the scenic Maligne Lake Road, one of the most beautiful drives in the Canadian Rockies. We kept the windows down the entire way, breathing in the crisp mountain air while keeping our eyes peeled for wildlife. We were lucky enough to spot black bears, grizzlies, elk (and even their babies!), making the drive just as memorable as the destination itself.

Spirit Island: More Than Just a Viewpoint
Please be mindful: Spirit Island holds deep spiritual significance for several Indigenous communities, especially the Stoney Nakoda, who view it as a sacred place of reflection and ancestral connection. This is more than a photo spot. It’s a reminder of the timeless bond between Indigenous people and these sacred lands. As visitors, we’re privileged to experience this incredible place, but it’s equally important to do so with respect.
When we stepped off the boat and walked towards the viewpoint, something unexpected happened.
Everyone became quiet.
There was no rush to take photos or record videos. People simply stood there, taking in the incredible landscape.
It’s one of those rare places that reminds you that some destinations aren’t meant to be conquered or checked off a bucket list; they’re meant to be appreciated.
Our Experience
From Banff to Jasper
The evening before, we’d driven from Banff to Jasper, arriving exhausted, sun-soaked, and ready for a good night’s sleep. We gave ourselves permission to sleep in, finally leaving the hotel around 2:30 pm, completely unaware that the day ahead would become one of the most unforgettable of our lives.
The Drive to Maligne Lake
The drive itself felt like an attraction. Towering peaks, rushing glacial rivers and endless alpine forests surrounded us the entire way. Every few kilometres we found ourselves slowing down, not because of traffic, but because another incredible view appeared around the next corner. Seeing black bears, grizzlies and elk along the roadside made the journey even more magical.
Waiting for the Cruise
After wandering around the shoreline and taking far too many photos, we noticed the final boat cruise of the day was leaving in just a couple of hours. We didn’t think twice. Tickets purchased. Apres ordered. Adventure confirmed. We found a table overlooking the lake and watched kayakers glide across the turquoise water while counting down to departure.
Cruising Across Maligne Lake
We somehow ended up first in line for boarding – which probably never happens. As the boat pulled away from the dock, the scenery became more dramatic with every passing minute. The guides shared stories about the lake’s history, Indigenous culture and wildlife, making the journey feel so much richer than simply taking a scenic boat ride. Every turn seemed to reveal another postcard-perfect view.
The Moment We Saw Spirit Island
When Spirit Island finally appeared, the entire boat fell silent. Photos simply don’t do this place justice. No video. No drone shot. No filter.

We based ourselves in the town of Jasper, about 45 minutes from Maligne Lake, making it an easy day trip. During our first visit, we stayed at the Athabasca Hotel, a charming historic hotel right in the heart of town. On our second visit, we camped at Whistlers RV Campground, and it was the perfect launchpad for all our adventures while staying surrounded by the mountains and nature.
If you’re visiting during the summer months, book accommodation as early as possible. Jasper fills up quickly, especially between June and September.
